UGC NET June 2026 re-exam held for English, Commerce and Sociology after paper errors
The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducted the re-examination of three UGC NET June 2026 papers, English, Commerce and Sociology, on 9 and 10 September, after a review panel found significant errors in the question papers used in June. Fresh admit cards for the retest were issued on the official portal, ugcnet.nta.nic.in, Careerindia and Sarkari Jobs reported.
The English paper (subject code 30) was held in the first shift on 9 September from 9 am to 12 noon, and Commerce (code 08) in the second shift from 3 pm to 6 pm the same day. Sociology (code 05) was conducted on 10 September in the morning shift, according to the schedule cited by Careerindia.
Why the retest was ordered
The original UGC NET June 2026 examination was held on 22, 23, 24, 25, 29 and 30 June in computer-based mode, Sarkari Jobs reported. Careerindia said NTA ordered the retest after a panel "flagged significant errors in the three papers", following complaints from candidates about multiple mistakes in the question sets. Candidates were not charged any additional fee for the re-examination.
The UGC NET determines eligibility for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), appointment as Assistant Professor and admission to PhD programmes at Indian universities, which is why errors in a paper can affect thousands of academic careers.
Admit cards and exam-day rules
NTA released the re-exam admit cards on 4 September, per Sarkari Jobs, and instructed candidates to download the document specific to the re-examination rather than reuse their June hall ticket. Candidates were required to log in with their application number and date of birth, download both the admit card and the undertaking, and verify their centre, shift and personal details.
Exam-day guidelines reported by Careerindia asked candidates to report two hours before the exam, with gates closing 30 minutes before the start. A printed admit card, a passport-size photograph and a valid photo ID were mandatory. Stationery, electronic items, food and ornaments were barred, and the city intimation slip could not be used in place of the admit card. NTA's helpline (011-40759000) was available for admit card issues.
What the episode says about exam integrity
The re-examination is the second time in three years that a UGC NET cycle has required a partial or full retest. In 2024 the June exam was cancelled outright over integrity concerns and re-held in August and September. This year's issue was narrower, limited to question-paper errors in three subjects, but it has renewed scrutiny of NTA's paper-setting and moderation processes at a time when the agency is implementing reforms recommended for NEET, JEE and CUET.
What happens next
NTA has not yet announced the result date for the re-conducted papers. Candidates in the three subjects can expect provisional answer keys and an objection window before final results are released and merged with the June 2026 cycle. Those appearing for the December 2026 UGC NET cycle should watch the NTA website for the notification, which usually appears in the autumn.
